Recycling waste in the Colombian Amazon

Recycling waste in the Colombian Amazon

In Colombia, and like in most countries in Latin America, proper recycling systems are inexistent: of the 7,500 tonnes in waste generated per year in Colombia, only 17% are adequately recycled. A comprehensive innovative waste management program, from the collection of plastic to its processing into a sustainable material - here plastic wood – is essential to address the region’s economic, environmental and human challenges. At term, this project will help process the 70 tonnes of waste produced daily in Leticia, educate the local population about recycling issues, enable better living and working conditions for the recyclers as well as provide a cheaper construction material to more than 25,000 people, hence reducing the actual housing crisis whilst promoting more sustainable construction habits in Leticia.
